In my work on youth suicide at Cronkite News PBS in Phoenix, Arizona, I joined a team of other talented journalists to dig deep into answering a difficult question: What can be done about youth suicide?
Along with my teammates and talented professionals from across the media industry, I sought to uncover workable solutions to the alarming public health crisis. Drawing on fieldwork and interviews with scores of peers, parents, teachers, lawmakers, clinicians, and counselors from across Arizona and around the country, along with my team, I aided in identifying a multiplicity of factors linked to youth suicide, rooting out insights into which prevention efforts have worked and which haven’t.
It was an attempt to go beyond the simple answers and provide a more complete account of a phenomenon that health experts predicted to worsen amid the current COVID-19 crisis.
